Molly Malone
James Yorkston is credited with writing this
folk song about Molly Malone from Dublin.
It's not clear if Molly was a real person or
some one from James Yorkston's mind.
This is a Dublin street song that dates back
to 1884.
The Dubliners' late (last?) version of this
song is with Patsy Watchorn singing.

G
In Dublin's fair city,
Am C
Where the girls are so pretty,
G Am D7
I first set my eyes on sweet Molly Mal-one,
G
As she wheeled her wheel barrow,
Am C
Through streets broad and narrow,
G D G
Crying cockles and mussels, a-live, alive-O!
Chorus:
G Em Am D7
A-live, alive-O, a-live alive-O
G Bm G D G
Crying cockles and mussels, a-live, alive-O!
G
She was a fishmonger,
Am C
But sure t'was no wonder,
G Am D7
For so were her father and mother be-fore.
G
And they both wheeled their barrow,
Am C
Through the streets wide and narrow,
G D G
Crying cockles and mussels, a-live, alive-O.
Chorus:
G Em Am D7
A-live, alive-O, a-live alive-O
G Bm G D G
Crying cockles and mussels, a-live, alive-O!
G
She died of a fever,
Am C
And no one could save her,
G Am D7
And that was the end of sweet Mollie Ma-lone.
G
Now her ghost wheels her barrow,
Am C
Through the streets broad and narrow,
G D G
Crying 'Cockles and Mussels, a-live, alive-O.
Chorus:
G Em Am D7
A-live, alive-O, a-live alive-O
G Bm G D G
Crying cockles and mussels, a-live, alive-O!

Crying[C] 'Cockles and Mussels,
A-[G]live, alive,[C] oh.
In[G] Dublin's fair city, where the[D] girls are so pretty,
I'[G] first set my eyes on sweet[D] Mollie Malone.
As she[G] wheeled her wheel-barrow, through the[D] streets broad and narrow
