The Town I Loved So Well
This is a modern Irish folk song written By Phil Coulter
and a huge hit for The Dubliners. It is one of Phil's famous
songs about his native City of Derry , Luke Kelly made
this one his own , Paddy Reilly also does a mighty job on it
too , this is like a Derry anthem like Molly Malone is to Dublin.

1. In my me-mo-ry I will always see
D A A E
The town that I have loved so well
A E D A
Where our school played ball by the gasyard wall
D A E A
And we laughed through the smoke and the smell.
A E D A
Going home in the rain running up the dark lane
D E
Passed the jail and down beside the fountain
A E D A
Those were ha-ppy days in so many many ways
D A E A
In the town I loved so well.

2. In the early morning the shirt fact'ry horn
D A A E
Called the women from Creggan, the Moor and the Bog
A E D A
While the men on the dole played a mother's role
D A E A
Fed the_children and then walked the dog
A E D A
And when times got rough there was just about enough
D E
But they saw it through without complaining
A E D A
For deep in-side was a burning pride
D A E A
In the town I loved so well.

3. There was mu-sic there in the Derry air
D A A E
Like a language that we could all un-derstand
A E D A
I re-member the day when I earned my first pay
D A E A
When_I played in a small pick-up band
A E D A
There I spent my youth and to tell you the truth
D E
I was sa-d to leave it_all behind me
A E D A
There I learned about life and I found a wife
D A E A
In the town I loved so well.

4. But when I re-turned oh my eyes how they burned
D A A E
To see how a town could be brought to its knees
A E D A
By the ar-moured cars and the bombed out bars
D A E A
And the gas that hangs on to ev'ry breeze
A E D A
Now the ar-my's installed by the old gasyard wall
D E
And the damned barbed wire gets high'r_and higher
A E D A
With their tanks and_their guns, oh my God, what_have_they done
D A E A
To the town I loved so well.
A E D A
5. Now the mu-sic's gone but they carry on
D A A E
For_their spirit's been bruised, never bro-ken
A E D A
They will not forget but their hearts are set
D A E A
On tomorrow and peace once again
A E D A
Now what's done is done and what's won is won
D E
And what's lost is lost and_gone forever
A E D A
I can on-ly pray for a bright brand_new day
D A E A
For the town I love so well.
