Born In A Small Coal Town


 D I was born in a small coal  G town. 
Most men from  A there had to worked under D ground.
 D Lying on their sides, pick or shovel in  G hand,
Digging that  A old dirty black coal the best they  D can.

 D My father said to me one  G day,
You go to  A school so you won't have work this  D way.
 D I went to school as I was  G told, 
Studied hard  A so I wouldn't have to dig that  D coal.
 
 D In our house it worked this  G way,
Chores came  A first, lessons next and then go  D play. 
 D Played a lot of sports and had lots of G  friends.
Knew most  A everyone in town way back  D then.

 D WE often just gathered  G round,
Party  A hard with all the friends we'd  D found.
 D Then I grew up and I moved a G way,
Got my  A own apartment and a job with decent  D pay.

 D Since then I have moved a time or  G two, 
But in my  A mind that small coal town is not far  D away.
 D I seldom go back to my family G  home, 
Don't know many  A people now, most are strangers since I've D  gone.

 D Often wish things didn't  G change,
I could go A  back to that small coal town and visit my  D friends.
 D We all have changed with new people we've G  met,
But that  A small coal town has memories I'll not D  forget.
